  • What Should You Expect During a Storm Damage Restoration Project?

After an extreme weather event, you should contact your roofing contractor for an inspection. Sometimes, signs of damage are not apparent until water starts leaking inside your home. If your roof was badly affected by the storm, the sooner you need to get it repaired.

Storm Damage Restoration

Here’s what usually happens during a storm damage restoration.

What to Expect

Inspection

After you’ve reached out to your contractors, they will visit your home for an inspection. Professionals will assess the damage and determine whether you need a roof replacement or just repairs. Usually, your roof restoration contractor will talk about the ideal plan of action with you and your insurance adjuster.

Restoration

Once you’ve discussed and agreed on the plan, the actual work starts. The type of equipment necessary for the restoration depends on the level of damage. If flooding occurred, your contractor would use specialized pumps and vacuums to get rid of water.

Cleanup

After the repairs or replacement have been completed, your contractor will bring in generators for dehumidifiers and air movers. Using them will prevent mold and mildew growth, which can affect your home’s indoor air quality. Restoration companies typically use cleaners and disinfectants on hard surfaces. They might also shampoo carpets that are not significantly damaged and apply deodorant to get rid of unpleasant smells.

What to Do While Waiting for Your Roofer

While waiting for your contractor, you should look out for broken glass, exposed nails and other hazards. Keep in mind that downed power lines are extremely dangerous. It’s best to stay at least 10 feet away from them and notify your utility company.

As much as possible, don’t check for water or storm damage at night. If necessary, be sure to have a flashlight with you and not a candle. An open flame increases the risk of a fire or explosion due to a damaged gas line.
